Two reviews, one application
An Apex sign permit goes through two desks. Planning checks the design against the Unified Development Ordinance and any Master Sign Plan for your site. Then Building Inspections reviews the structure and electrical work and issues a building or electrical permit if the sign needs one. Both have to clear before the sign goes up.
That means the drawings need both kinds of detail: what the sign looks like, and how it is attached and wired. We prepare both, whether it is a storefront sign in a new shopping center, a sign for a downtown business, or an entrance sign for a subdivision. The Town also wants your landlord's signature on the rendering, so we get that early.

Apex sign questions
Do I need a permit for a sign in Apex?
Yes for permanent signs. The Town of Apex says all permanent signs and some temporary signs must be Town approved, under Section 8.7 of its Unified Development Ordinance. Applications go to the Planning Department through the Town portal, and Building Inspections issues a building or electrical permit afterward if the sign needs one.
When does an Apex sign need a building permit?
The Town's form lists four triggers: the sign is lit, it projects from a structure, it has its own support structure like a masonry wall or pole, or a change out replaces parts not meant to be swapped. Non-lit wall signs and projecting signs of 6 square feet or less do not need a building permit.
How much are the Apex sign permit fees?
On the Town's 2026 application, the Planning fee is $75 for the first sign plus $10 for each additional sign. If a building or electrical permit is needed, the form lists $150 for building and $75 for electrical. Those are Town fees, separate from the cost of the sign.
Can you replace an old neighborhood entrance sign?
Yes. We build new entrance signs and refresh old ones. If the new sign has its own masonry wall or footing, Apex will want footing and foundation details and a landscape plan, and we prepare those.
Why does Apex want a night view rendering?
For any lit sign, the Town asks to see how it will look after dark. We include one with every lit sign design, and the sign circuit stays off until the Town gives written approval.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in North Raleigh and work across the Triangle, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Holly Springs, Garner, Morrisville and Fuquay-Varina.
