A sign at the road without the masonry
A post and panel sign is what it sounds like: one or two posts set in the ground, with a sign panel mounted between them or hung from them. It does the same job as a monument at the edge of your lot, usually for much less, and it suits buildings where a heavy masonry base would look out of place.
The look can change a lot. Square aluminum posts with a flat printed panel read clean and corporate. A carved HDU panel with raised letters feels like a traditional shop sign. Timber posts with a hanging sign suit neighborhoods and pools. We help you pick the style, then file the permit and set the posts.
Post and panel styles

Carved HDU panels
Raised letters and borders carved into high density urethane, then painted. It looks like carved wood and does not rot.

Shaped panels
Arched tops, routed borders and a small rider panel underneath for an address or a tagline.

Printed panels
A flat aluminum or PVC panel with printed or vinyl graphics. Quick to make and easy to update when details change.

Timber frames
Heavy timber posts and a crossbeam with a carved sign hung below. Warm and solid, popular at neighborhood entrances.

Hanging arm signs
A shaped sign hung from a single post and arm, for entrances and small offices with a narrow strip of lawn.
Directional signs
Arrow panels that point visitors to parking, the main entrance or deliveries.

Choosing posts
- Square aluminum
- Clean and modern, with flat or ball caps. Will not rot or rust.
- Round posts with decorative bases
- A more traditional look for offices, banks and medical practices.
- Timber
- Rustic and substantial. Best for neighborhoods, pools and parks.
- Sleeved posts
- A PVC or aluminum sleeve over a structural post, so you get the look without the upkeep of bare wood.
Post and panel sign questions
How much do post and panel signs cost?
Simple post and panel signs start around $1,500. Carved panels, decorative posts, extra rider panels and lighting add to that. You get a free written quote before any work starts.
Do I need a permit for a post and panel sign?
For a permanent ground sign in Raleigh and most nearby towns, usually yes. Temporary site signs follow different rules. We check what applies to your property and file the permit.
Should I get a post and panel sign or a monument?
A post and panel sign costs less and goes in faster, and it suits smaller buildings and tight frontages. A monument sits on a solid base, feels more permanent and gives more room for lighting and multiple tenants.
Can a post and panel sign be lit?
Yes. The usual choice is a pair of ground spotlights or small lights mounted on the posts. If you want the panel lit from inside, a cabinet or monument sign is usually the better fit.
What materials hold up best outside?
Aluminum and carved HDU do not rot, rust or warp, so they last the longest with little care. Bare wood needs repainting over time, and printed graphics fade faster in full sun than paint does.
What areas do you serve?
