Depth without the wiring
Dimensional letters are individual letters and logo shapes cut from a solid sheet or block and fixed to a wall. Unlike channel letters, they usually have no lights inside, which keeps them slimmer, simpler to install and less expensive. In daylight they look sharp and permanent, and a light aimed from above or below keeps them working at night.
The material sets the look and the lifespan. Flat-cut aluminum gives a crisp metal edge. Acrylic comes in almost any color with a gloss or matte face. PVC is light and weatherproof. Carved HDU can hold bevels and rounded edges. We match the material to where the letters go, then mount them flush or out on standoffs.
Materials and styles
Flat-cut aluminum
Cut from solid aluminum plate, then painted or left brushed. Thin, crisp and tough outdoors.

Acrylic letters
Bright colors or a polished face, for lobbies, offices and covered storefronts.
PVC letters
Light, waterproof and painted to any color. A good value for exterior sign bands.

Letters on a panel
Letters layered over a painted backer, so the name pops against a contrasting field.

Canopy-mounted letters
Letters set on top of a canopy or awning, where they read against the building or the sky.
Need them lit?
Letters with lights inside are channel letters. Halo-lit letters glow from behind and keep a solid face.
How the letters mount
- Flush mount
- Threaded studs in the back of each letter go into drilled holes with adhesive, so the letters sit tight against the wall.
- Standoff mount
- Spacers hold the letters a little off the wall. They cast a deeper shadow, and the gap hides an uneven brick or stone surface.
- On a backer
- Letters fixed to a panel first, then the panel goes on the wall. Fewer holes in the building and easy to move later.
- Layout
- A full-size paper pattern taped to the wall guides the drilling, so spacing and baseline come out exactly as designed.

Dimensional letter questions
What are dimensional letters?
Dimensional letters are individual letters and logos cut from solid material, like aluminum, acrylic, PVC or HDU, and mounted to a wall or panel. They have real thickness, so they cast a shadow and look more substantial than a flat printed sign.
Dimensional letters or channel letters?
Channel letters have lights inside and cost more. Dimensional letters are solid, slimmer and less expensive. If you need to be seen at night, choose channel letters or light dimensional letters from outside.
Which material is best outdoors?
Aluminum is the toughest. PVC and HDU are waterproof and hold paint well. Acrylic works outside too; we use sign-grade cast acrylic made to resist yellowing in the sun.
Can dimensional letters go on brick?
Yes. Brick is a common surface. Standoff mounting helps on rough or uneven brick, and studs can be set into the brick or the mortar joints.
How long do dimensional letters take?
Most acrylic and PVC letter sets take 1 to 3 weeks from proof approval. Small sets can be faster. We give you a timeline for metal letters when we quote.
