Downtown storefronts to neighborhood entrances
In Wake Forest, a sign permit is a type of development permit, checked against Chapter 11 of the Unified Development Ordinance for location, size, height, number of signs and lighting. Most signs also need a building permit, and lit signs need an electrical permit. Signs 6 feet or taller need drawings from a design professional.
Downtown is its own case. The Town says every exterior change there needs Planning approval and suggests a pre-submittal meeting before you apply. Outside downtown, much of our work in a town like this is monument signs for churches and neighborhoods and storefront signs in newer shopping centers. We plan each one around Chapter 11 from the start.

Wake Forest sign questions
Do I need a permit for a sign in Wake Forest?
Yes for permanent signs. Wake Forest issues three kinds of sign permits: permanent, temporary (for special events and grand openings, up to 30 days) and construction signs (up to 32 square feet). Applications go through the GeoCivix portal and are checked against Chapter 11 of the UDO.
Is it different for a downtown Wake Forest business?
Yes. The Town says every exterior change downtown needs Planning Department approval, every sign needs its own permit, and it recommends a pre-submittal meeting before applying. We set that meeting up as the first step.
Does my sign need a building permit too?
Usually. The Town's checklist says a building permit is typically required in addition to the sign permit, and signs 6 feet or taller need a design professional. Signs under 6 feet tall are exempt from building permits. Lit signs always need an electrical permit.
Can I have a scrolling or flashing message board?
Wake Forest prohibits signs with blinking, flashing or intermittent lights, animation or moving parts. A message board can still work if it is set up to stay within those rules, and we talk through that before you buy one.
What does a monument sign permit need in Wake Forest?
Along with the drawings and a sketch plan showing setbacks and sight distance triangles, the Town asks for a landscaping plan that follows Chapter 11 of the UDO. We prepare it with the rest of the package.
What areas do you serve?
