The box behind a lot of the signs you pass
A cabinet sign is an aluminum box with LED lighting inside and a translucent face on the front. Your logo and lettering go on the face, usually in vinyl or printed graphics, and the whole face lights up evenly at night. It's one of the most common lit signs on the road because it's simple, affordable and easy to read.
The same box works in a lot of places. Mount it on a wall, raise it on a pole, set it into a monument base or build it with a face on each side. When your logo changes or a tenant moves out, you replace the face and keep the cabinet, which keeps the cost of updates low.
Cabinet sign options
Wall cabinets
A single box on the building front. Costs less than channel letters and is easy to take with you if you move.

Pole and pylon cabinets
Large cabinets raised on poles so drivers can see them from the road.
Monument cabinets
A lit cabinet set into a ground-level base, often with a panel for each tenant in a multi-tenant building.
Shaped cabinets
Boxes built to an oval, a circle or the outline of your logo instead of a plain rectangle.
Push-through faces
Letters cut from thick acrylic that push through an opaque face, so only the lettering glows. A sharper look than a flat face.
Double-sided cabinets
Two faces on one box, for signs that need to read from both directions.
Cabinet sign or channel letters?
- Choose a cabinet when
- budget matters, you want a lot of information on one sign, or you expect to change the graphics later.
- Choose channel letters when
- you want each letter lit on its own and a more custom look on the wall.
- Or use both
- Some businesses pair channel letters for the name with a small lit cabinet for the logo.

Cabinet sign questions
Is a cabinet sign cheaper than channel letters?
Usually, for the same size. A cabinet is one box with one face, while channel letters are built one letter at a time. The tradeoff is the look: channel letters read as separate shapes on the wall.
Can I replace just the face?
Yes. If the cabinet and lighting are sound, a new face is the cheapest way to update the sign for a new logo or a new tenant.
Can you convert my old fluorescent cabinet to LED?
Yes. LEDs cost less to run, last longer and light the face more evenly as the sign ages. We can do the conversion on its own or when we replace the face.
Do cabinet signs need a permit?
Yes. Lit signs need a sign permit in Raleigh and most nearby towns, and many shopping centers have their own sign rules on top of that. We take care of both.
How long does it take?
Most lit signs take 4 to 8 weeks from design approval to installation. Permit review is usually the biggest variable.
